The Praying Hands motif has a touching history rooted in the life of the 15th-century artist Albrecht D?rer. Born into a large, poor family in Germany, Albrecht and his brother Albert were both talented artists. Due to financial constraints, only one could attend the famous Academy in Nuremberg. The brothers made a pact: the winner of a coin toss would study art, while the other worked in the mines to support him. Albrecht won and studied art, while Albert worked tirelessly in the mines. After four years, Albrecht returned home successful, only to find that Albert?s hands had been so damaged by labor that he could no longer pursue his dream of becoming an artist. In honor of his brother?s sacrifice, Albrecht created the famous “Praying Hands” drawing, a symbol of selfless love and devotion. This motif has since become a beloved symbol of faith, often replicated in various forms of art.
